College Visits: Moreton Morrell

Posted by Jessica Walton on 1st Feb 2018

Country Baskets are on a mission to visit as many fabulous floristry colleges as possible this year! First up was the lovely Morton Morrell College in Warwickshire, hidden away in the rural countryside, this college was a really great insight into the world of student floristry.

Leaflets containing our brand new student discount and a clue to the upcoming activity!

Both Will and I visited Morton Morrell, on arrival we were greeted by a room full of friendly florist faces and the overwhelming scent of fresh flowers! The level 2 students were creating lovely bouquets, and were very excited to see what we had brought along to show them.

We started off the one hour session with an ice breaker - or egg breaker in this case! We split the group into teams, gave each team a selection of Country Baskets product and a raw egg! Each team had ten minutes to create a protective structure that would keep the egg safe when dropped from a height, a game ideal to get everyone thinking and working together.

All was chaos when the teams realised time was almost up! This structure was called 'Pan'... short for PANIC!

Team 'Hope' adapted the strategy... randomlyputitallttogethercrossourfingersandHOPE!

'Hope' completed. But will it stop the egg from breaking?

The engineers of 'Sputnick' hard at work. With the clock ticking, the atmosphere was much too intense for smiles.

'Sputnick' the futuristic egg protector completed! 'Sputnick' was a very very close second!

Each team used a totally different strategy, and it was great to see every day Country Baskets items used in different ways. The students loved the creations so much they even gave them a name. Luckily all eggs survived, and the prize went to the most creative structure, named Gary!

'Gary' the beetle featured a soft inner of our tissue paper and an outer of quality jute ribbon!

A worthy winner by a tense vote, 'Gary' protected the egg with his ten legs and earned points for creativity.

Here at Country Baskets we are very passionate about product, we love sourcing products that florists will love and turn into something beautiful. We brought along a bag of goodies to show the college exactly what we have to offer, with everything from dried accessories to beautiful Polish glassware. We had a good feedback session with a lot of welcome feedback, learning what else we can stock for florists that they will love.

The florists' eyes widened at the sight of these display products, as the creative ideas shot through their heads!

The students unwrapping bag of goodies! Jute ribbon, rattan grass, wooden buttons, hessian bags and much more!

Alongside the selection of product we took along our brand new student pack, with information on everything from setting up a basic website to starting an Instagram page. All of this information will be available online to students that we visit very shortly - keep an eye on our Facebook page for more information!

Jess answered questions about Country Baskets and many were pleased to discover the massive selection we offer.

We had a really productive day, it was a great insight into the world of floristry and where it all begins. We received a huge amount of valuable feedback, that we look forward to putting into practise. We would like to thank Morton Morrell Floristry students and Head of Floristry Jane Benefield for having us.
