BFA Flower of the Month- Summer Flowers

August sees us celebrating the beautiful Delphinium, Allium & Gladiolas which are the perfect summer flowers. Summer is all about happiness, bright colours and beautifully sunny days and these flowers represent that so well. The bright and bold colours of these flowers are typical of this great season.

Origin

Delphinium- This wonderful flower derives from the English, French and American growers and has been enjoyed by us right from the start of our gardening culture.

Allium- These beautiful flowers are a member of the onion family! Alliums are grown throughout the world, typically in temperate regions in the northern hemisphere.

Gladiola- This delightful flower is a typical summer bloomer which originates from Africa and wasn't known in Europe until between 1739 and 1745.

Symbolism

Delphiniums symbolise truth and protection and are seen as a protective plant. They can also represent cheerfulness, goodwill, pleasure and generosity making it a great positive flower to give to someone special.

Gladiolas have many meanings including; honour, remembrance, strength of character, faithfulness, sincerity & integrity. The Gladiola is considered as the flower of the gladiators and have long been associated with swords.

The Allium symbolises unity, and is often traded between couples. They are also given to express the idea that the giver finds the recipient flawless and elegant in both appearance and manners making them great wedding flowers.

Shapes & Colours

The perfect globe shape flowers of the Allium come in colours ranging from the purest white to a striking pink and almost all of these bloom in the summer months. Some of the varieties can be small and simple and others can be tall and bold, with over 300 varieties you are sure to find one that you love!

Gladiolas have an abundance of varities in a glorious array of colours featuring yellow, burgundy and purple. Their striking colours and dramatic sizes make for impressive backdrops in your garden. The Gladiola is distinctive because the flowers bloom on both sides of the stem.
