In celebration of the upcoming season, we have compiled our top 5 favourite festive flowers to share with you.

Poinsettia

The Poinsettia is the beautifully bright red potted plant you see everywhere at Christmastime are. This plant is so commonly associated with the season that it's also known as the Christmas Star.

Did you know that Poinsettias aren't really a flower, but are instead a red-topped plant? However, it still manages to stand tall as a favourite of flower lovers and is often given as a gift like a bouquet at this time of year. It is also a big part of many Christmas decorations traditions due to its almost floral star-like foliage.

Meaning: Joy, love, purity, and hope amongst other things.

Holly

Decorating with holly is a long-standing tradition during the winter holidays. The red berries of the holly bush are symbolic in many cultures, inspiring hope, faith and love during the depths of the darkest and coldest months. A versatile plant that can be used on its own or mixed with other greenery, holly is an inexpensive item to spruce up your holiday decor.

Meaning: Good luck & protection. In a wreath it symbolizes friendship and faithful love.

Mistletoe

Mistletoe is as closely linked to Christmas as Holly and Poinsettia. The symmetrical branching, silvery green foliage and white pearl like berries make it the most elegant yuletide decoration.

Apparently, proper etiquette states kisses under mistletoe should only be placed on the cheek and following each, a berry must be removed from the mistletoe sprig. Once all of the berries have been removed, no more kisses can be had.

Meaning: Fertility, love, peace, and goodwill.

Hellabore

Also known as the 'Christmas Rose', this stems from it's ability to bloom when so many other flowers are dormant. You can recognise the flower by its white, bowl-shaped flowers of about 3 inches across, adorned with crowns of showy golden-yellow inner.

Meaning: Serenity, tranquility and peace.

Amaryllis

Some varieties of this stunning flower are multicoloured or striped. You can recognise the Amaryllis by her large and trumpet shaped flowers. On one stem, there are usually four to six flowers and no leaves, because of this it is nicknamed the Naked Lady.

Meaning: Pride, enchanting beauty, friendship and affection. This makes the Amaryllis a perfect flower to give to a loved one.
