How-to: Make Your Own Hanging Decoration

Posted by Jessica Walton on 27th Nov 2017

Making your own hanging decorations is the perfect way to bring a homemade and handcrafted feel to your Christmas, and this adorable owl hanging decoration is perfect for doing just that. With the chance to use different coloured buttons and wool as part of the design, a unique owl will be created each time meaning a collection can be made and hung around the home. There is also the chance to make an adorable gift for any loved one this festive period with this quick and easy craft, so why not give it a go yourself?

What you will need:
Wood slice Natural
Large Black Buttons
Small White Buttons
Craft Card Ivory
Cream Textured Wool
Textile Permanent Markers

Step One:
First place two large black buttons on the wood slice where the owls eyes need to be. Make sure that they are in the right place then use a glue gun to stick them down. The small, cream buttons will need to be glued on top of the black buttons to make the pupils.

Step Two:
Next, wrap some of the fleece wool around the base of the buttons to simulate radiating feathers around the eyes. Continue these pieces that are wrapped around the buttons up to the top of what will be the owls head, to start the wing detail and make sure there is a clean seem from the wool.

Step Three:
Then cut out a small piece of card in a triangular shape for the beak and secure it to the wood slice using a glue gun.

Step Four:
Add some more fleece wool to continue creating the wing details, this will need to run from the center of the eyes diagonally out to the rim of the wood slice.

Step Five:
Using a brown marker, draw on some feathers in the empty spaces around the fleece wool leaving the bottom quarter blank of any detail.

Step Six:
Finally, drill a hole at the top of the wood slice and thread some string through making sure to tie it secure in a loop for hanging on your tree or around the house.
