This is the first instalment of our Wedding Showstoppers series. Look out for our following one next Wednesday.
Wedding season is upon us with many new exciting ideas, but let’s talk Wedding Showstoppers. A wedding day should revolve around the couple in love, yet ultimately in most cases it doesn’t.
Quite often the opinion of others has an effect on the couple’s perfect day. How often have crazy comments such as “We can’t have that! My Aunt’s husbands brothers girlfriend would not approve” been heard during the planning stage. The aim is to impress and please, so make way for Wedding Showstoppers. It’s a part of the wedding that has potential to be the pinnacle of the day. A gorgeous dress you can admire, but taking a slice from a giant tiered cake, suspended over a bed of flowers, champagne water-falling either side with glasses to help yourself, that’s your showstopper. When the guests can have fun and interact with something they will talk and get photo happy. That’s what’s going to win you ‘best wedding ever’.
Wedding Showstoppers – Cakes
A traditional three tiered cake, not ‘WOW’ enough, then how about a suspended cake or a selection of beautiful cakes.
A suspended cake is something that you may not have seen, however they are becoming more popular. Executed elegantly or very OTT, whichever way it’s done, the cakes a showstopper alright. Decorated with flowers is most popular, and as with most floral decorations, it's something quite gorgeous. This display is going to get people talking and photographed to the max. Even though not its aim, it may end up being a top selfie spot for the day. The beauty and uniqueness will score brownie points with everyone.
So a tiered cake allows you to try a few different flavours, but why stop there. A cake table not only looks absolutely amazingly mouth drooling but it gives the guests so many options. A full guest is a happy guest. In terms of cakes, the prettier the better. You’re still looking to wow people, maybe think about a theme or story so it all links together nicely. Aesthetically make sure you plan out how you want the stand to look, how quirky do you want it. The cakes can just be sat on a table or can be placed on a purpose built tree display or maybe a bicycle stand or how about a display made from crates. The question is how big your imagination is (and budget).
Combining these two ideas can give you something along the lines of a cake sat on a miniature swing. Surrounded by more cakes the swing will sit on the table. This gives you the best of both worlds.

Wedding Showstoppers - Alters & Aisles
There's a moment when everyone is concentrating on the same thing. As the bride walks down the aisle, all eyes are on her, so making that walk as magical as possible is so important. The wedding ceremony is the main part of the day so will be heavily documented. Making this area as picturesque as possible will make your wedding photos look like a Vogue photo-shoot.
The aisle dressed with flowers, candles, lanterns or whatever else fits into your wedding theme. A beautiful pathway leading you to the love of your life. Due to your venue location you may have decorative restrictions, but there will be a look perfect for you. Create a meadow feel for your guests to sit in by using wild flowers to run adjacent to the aisle. It is very fresh, adds colour and a gorgeous scent to the ceremony.
A beautiful backdrop or setting is perfect when getting married, be that your stood at an alter or seated at a registrars table. You can go big and bold with a floral wall or more simplistic with a thin wire frame delicately dressed in flowers. Both very different but both very picturesque.
Decorating both the aisle and the alter may seem too much but all depends on how heavy you go. It can really transform the area from nice to spectacular. Use silk flowers as an alternative, then anything you make you can keep and use as a house feature after the wedding. No waste and you end up with a nice little home improvement.

Wedding Showstoppers - Floral Hangings
Taking your table centrepiece to the sky has become very popular. Having it look more like an installation is very intriguing as well as gorgeous. It attracts the eye and can be something you make yourself or ask a florist to do. You can incorporate items such as ladders or large dried vines. If you have access to electricity, adding in lights changes the display completely. Get creative. Our florist Tracy has made a hanging display which you can see here.
